Acting on her impression she contacted President Steven Romney of the Colonia Juarez Mexico Stake to find out what could be done. President Romney, who serves as stake president over the affected area, gave Sheila information about a state hospital in Chihuahua that serves the very poor. His wife, Silvia Romney, told her of mothers leaving the hospital with their newborns wrapped in newspaper because they couldn’t afford blankets.
After careful planning and organizing the youth conference service project was arranged.
About 200 young men and young women from the St. David stake gathered to make blankets and assemble newborn kits. The kits included onesies, socks, diapers, wipes, stocking caps, and fleece blankets. “I told our youth about the needs of these young mothers, how they had nothing when they entered the hospital, and didn’t even have a blanket to wrap their new babies in when they left.”80 blankets and 200 newborn kits were packaged in plastic bags. Sheila said, “I told our youth about the needs of these young mothers, how they had nothing when they entered the hospital, and didn’t even have a blanket to wrap their new babies in when they left.” She said, “I was really impressed that our young men and women did such a good job. The blankets were not easy to do, they were actually quite complicated, but our youth had a good attitude about it. They didn’t get a chance to see the finished results, but if they did, I know they would be pleased.”“The Young Women from my ward learned a valuable lesson in compassion and love from this experience.” Sheila made arrangements to meet the Bishop of the Colonia Juarez Ward at the border, and he distributed the packages to the Young Women of the Villahermosa and Laguna Mexico Wards. The girls and their leaders distributed the blankets and newborn kits to women at the Mexican hospital.
Mexico’s Colonia Juarez Young Women’s President Fernanda Felix said, “The Young Women from my ward learned a valuable lesson in compassion and love from this experience.” She expressed gratitude and warm wishes to the youth in the St. David Arizona Stake for their service and for providing the opportunity for her youth to serve those in need along with them. ###
