FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tucson, AZ- The public is invited to a musical celebration of Christianity at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3530 West Magee Road, Tucson, Arizona on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.
The presentation is “Come unto Christ,” a cantata by contemporary Latter-day Saint composer Sally DeFord. She has given permission for Director Mel Claridge to customize the work, which makes this presentation unique. “The message of it is about the Savior Jesus Christ and about the Book of Mormon,” says Claridge. “It’s about our testimonies of all that. We’re sharing it through music, and I think everybody needs to hear it. I’m hoping members of the Church will step out and…bring their friends.”
The cantata consists of 10 moving choir pieces, a tenor solo, and an organ solo. Sprinkled throughout will be other solo voices and instrumental additions to the score. There will also be short narrations and costumed portrayals of Book of Mormon figures explaining how Christ interacted with the people in the Americas. It should run between 70 and 90 minutes.
Claridge continues, “I’m excited to do [this cantata] because I love beautiful music that speaks to me, and this music speaks to me—[both] the lyrics and the message.…I am thrilled to be conducting other people who respond the same way to the music—who feel the beauty and the spirit of it and who want to share it.” ###
